5th day:   Alviano Nature Reserve - Civita di Bagnoregio - Orvieto

This is a tour that takes place in the North of Lazio and the Southern tip of Umbria. After about an hour's journey by train we will proceed by bike along the Tiber Valley in the Nature Reserve in Alviano and then go all the way up (it's a rather long uphill slope, but the few stretches where it's tough are very short..... and it's definitely worth it) to delightful Civita di Bagnoregio. This is what's known as "the dying town". It is one of the most beautiful medieval villages in Italy and it sits atop a plateau of rock that is connected to the rest of the world by just a narrow bridge which can be crossed on foot or by bike. And lastly we will visit Orvieto, a city that is famous not just for its impressive cathedral but in general for its all-Italian beauty and mysterious charm. ...an amalgam of natural, artistic and historical beauty and breathtaking landscapes.
A tour which lasts about 14 hours and includes:

  • Lunch in a typical regional restaurant
with a panoramic view of Civita di Bagnoregio.
  • A visit to the Cathedral of Orvieto.
  • Dinner in a wine cellar.

6th day:    The Ancient Appian Way, Aqueducts and Caffarella Park

...Pedaling on a 2,300-year-old cobblestone Roman road, while going past an ancient sepulchre, a Roman statue, the ruins of a circus and an imperial palace; leaving the "regina viarum" heading towards the ancient Roman aqueducts that rise over the fields into the horizon and following them on their way to Rome; going through the Caffarella Park, a preserved strip of land of the Roman countryside that so impressed the 19th century travelers such as Byron, Goethe and Stendhal. An extraordinary tour of absolute beauty. A journey into a unique environment, in which miraculously intact nature, free from modernization, forms a backdrop to the continuous passage of historical, cultural and artistic events.
A 7 to 8-hour tour that also includes:

  • A guided tour of the Catacombs of
    San Callisto.
  • A lunch.

The evening is at your disposal.
